My Husband’s Interview

In my last post, I discussed how Fathers and Mothers have equal responsibility on the effects of smoking and the unborn child. Since, my husband plays an active role in our pregnancy and raising our child, I decided to interview him with some aspects I have been pondering and discussing in my blogs.

Ruma:

Since I quit smoking in my pregnancy; I have been doing research on smoking, and its effect on our child. Did you know that men smoking can affect preconception, prenatal and postnatal care?

Husband:

I never thought about effects of smoking on preconception as much. I have heard about prenatal and postnatal effects of smoking. I can’t even pick up a pack of smokes these days, without a warning label on my cigarette package indicating the prenatal and postnatal effects on smoking on my unborn child.

Ruma:

I quit smoking during my pregnancy, and we have discussed that I may have a biological or maternal intuition or strength which has helped me. Do you feel this intuition or urge to stop or reduce smoking during the pregnancy? If so, what are your thoughts?

Husband:

I do not feel an instinct or intuition to quit smoking…..I feel guilt that I have not quit smoking yet. Pregnant women have an internal strength that I do not understand.

Ruma:

Why do you think you have not quit smoking as well?

Husband:

I have an addiction to smoking, and I am finding it really hard not to quit. Honestly, the baby is not born yet; and it doesn’t feel as important for me to quit smoking as it does for the mother. I feel if I am going outside to smoke, I am protecting you and my unborn baby.

Ruma:

How will you support me to stay smoke free after the baby is born?

Husband:

I would say in so many words that “you have already gone through the hardest part of not smoking, keep it up….” I will try to maintain a smoke free environment, by not smoking in the car or in the house. I will also try to quit….I might need your help.

Ruma:

How will you prevent second and third hand smoke from your baby? Do you plan on smoking in-front of your baby?

Husband:

I do not plan on smoking in front of the baby. I plan on quitting smoking.

Ruma:

How can I help you to quit smoking?

Husband:

By staying smoke free. …if you start smoking again, I will not be able to quit as easy. Maybe you could help me get some smoking aids, patches etc?
