My next steps…

Wow…time has gone by so fast. I still remember writing my first blog on Pregnets. Over the year, my life has changed drastically. I have given birth to a wonderful baby boy. Throughout my blogs my smoking challenges have been illustrated. When I was pregnant, cigarette smoke made me sick and was not easy to remove totally from my life, however after giving birth smoking is something I crave and I am struggling with limiting smoking on a daily basis. The philosophy of life and death cultivates questions that all humans struggle with.  We strive to live, and avoid death. Yet our lifestyles tend to kill us.

  1. Cancer – 72,476
  2. Heart Disease – 47,627
  3. Stroke – 13,283
  4. Chronic lower respiratory diseases – 11, 184
  5. Accidents – 10, 716
  6. Diabetes – 7, 194
  7. Alzheimer’s – 6, 356
  8. Influenza and Pneumonia – 5, 767
  9. Suicide – 3, 728
  10. Kidney disease – 3, 294

The top 4 causes of death listed by Statistic Canada can all be linked or associated to smoking.  As if we didn’t know already, smoking kills…and it kills quite frequently.  So why do we do it?  Many would say it is just a bad habit.  Some say they like it.  Some say they have attempted to quit, but failed.  But I would postulate that most people feel, in the end, that they need to smoke.  The fact remains, that smoking kills. Effects of smoking on my relationships

Smoking has been a part of my life for many years. I cannot remember a time in my life when I was not smoking. I can’t even remember a time in my life when I was not exposed to 2nd hand smoke. Therefore, I can truly say that whether I was smoking or not smoking, smoking was and is part of my life.

Smoking and Breastfeeding

As a mother, I want to give the best nutritional food to my baby. Breastfeeding is known to be the healthiest for a baby. Health Canada recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and breastfeeding has many benefits to the baby, mother and society.  I have been exclusively breastfeeding my baby boy since birth. I enjoy the bonding breastfeeding provides for our relationship. However, since I have been having a couple of cigarettes daily, will this affect my baby? Continue reading

Smokers Help Line

The day had arrived – April 2015… I finally got the courage to reach out for help. I won’t lie, it was hard to pick up my phone and search http://www.smokershelpline.ca. I am not sure why, but maybe it was difficult because I had to face the truth….. I was a smoker and needed help. Maybe, I was trying to convince myself otherwise but I am a mother, and I need to be a good role model. Being a good role model starts with facing the facts. I want to live to see my children grow so I had to be a mature adult and face reality.

Once Upon a Time Ruma Quit Smoking… is it THE END?

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Ruma. She was a smoker and knew smoking was bad for her health and the health of her future pregnancies and children. In 2014 Ruma found out she was pregnant and quit smoking cold turkey. As the nicotine detoxified from her body, she gained many health benefits. Her senses returned, and she was feeling an increase in energy and motivation. She felt secure that she was giving her baby a healthy environment to grow. My Battle of Quitting Smoking

In my last couple of posts, I have discussed my difficulties with staying smoke free. My emotions and physical state, creates a reassurance that I am just a smoker and should not try to change this fact. Just as an alcoholic is always an alcoholic, a smoker is always a smoker.  Learning to deal with the cravings is a natural part of life now.

I feel very alone in this personal battle.  In the past, writing in the pregnet blog use to help me feel encouraged to stay smoke free. But now, writing about smoking has become more difficult because it is confirming my reality ….. “I have not won the battle to quitting”. Continue reading
