What has it been like blogging for Pregnets?

My experience being a blogger for Pregnets has been wonderful. I have thoroughly enjoyed every step of the way. It has made me realize how much I like to write, but also how much I like to read as well. It has made me dig deeper into some of my own thoughts about my smoking/my quitting. It has also brought me closer with my husband after we had a chance to discuss how he has been feeling through this process.  It was interesting for me to discuss with so many other people their experiences, and the methods that they chose to use/try. Quitting Smoking

There aren’t any easy ways to quit smoking. No matter how you do it there will be challenges. Over my next few blogs I will discuss a few different ways to quit; how I did it and what I learnt from friends who have quit recently quit. I will start with myself. For those of you who have not read my previous posts, there is one discussing my journey with smoking while pregnant and also while breastfeeding. But I have also discussed when I quit. I had no plans to quit when I did. To sum it up, I was in labour and driving to the hospital (I would not recommend going alone if you don’t have to… But especially not driving yourself) so I figured I would have my last smoke before they admitted me. Then as I flicked it out the window I decided it would be my last smoke ever. And it was. Cold turkey worked for me, but I know it obviously won’t work for everyone. Whether or not it is “safe” for you to do at any point in your pregnancy is something you need to discuss with your doctor. I always used it as an excuse not to quit. I thought it would put my baby into shock. I was told different by my OB. He encouraged me to quit sooner, but I chose not to.  Continue reading

Quitting & Weight Gain

As of right now, I am just under 14 months smoke free. Let me tell you, I feel amazing! Well, other than the weight I gained. I have gained a total of 35 pounds since I smoked my last cigarette. Please, do not let this discourage you if you are currently reading this and thinking about quitting smoking.

I did not think that I would gain the weight, I was busy. I didn’t even realize the increase in the junk that I was eating, until recently when I looked back at the things that I craved instead of a smoke. Continue reading

I am happier as an ex-smoker.

While reading this article: Compared with Smokers, Former Smokers More Satisfied with Their Health, I was thinking about my life in comparison to what they were writing.

My smoking status: Quit just over one year ago.

My quality of life:
*Health: I believe that although I have struggled with my weight a bit through quitting smoking, I am overall a healthier person since I quit smoking. My lungs feel better, my mind feels better. Mentally I feel stronger than I ever have as well.

*Work: Although right now I do not work, I find that I enjoy going for walks more with my daughter, or to the park. I don’t feel awkward going to the playground and being a parent who has to walk away to have a smoke. Quitting smoking also motivated me to go to back to school and further my education. Cigarette Packaging

I saw this picture above going around on social media, and it really got me thinking. Anyone who has read any of my previous posts, knows I am not a smoker anymore. And for those of you just joining now, go take a look at my other posts and check out my story!

I personally agree with the point this picture is making. It is not fair to single out smokers by putting these pictures on their cigarette packs. It is not just smokers that are indulging in something that causes harm to themselves and/or others. I think that they were on the right track bringing in the ‘gruesome’ pictures to cigarette packaging to try to scare away younger people who may not be fully informed of what smoking can do to them.
